Why Your iPhone Photo Prints at the Wrong Size — and How to Fix It
Troubleshooting why iPhone photo prints come out the wrong size — Fit to Page, paper mismatch, margins, PDF scaling and more.
You set a size carefully, preview looked right, and the paper still came out too large, too small, or stretched toward the edges. Wrong-size prints from iPhone are common — and usually come from scaling or paper settings after the layout was created, not from “the photo having the wrong pixels.”

Common causes
- Fit to Page / Scale to Fit — enlarges or shrinks the whole page to the printable area
- Paper size mismatch — layout created for Letter but printer thinks A4 (or the wrong tray paper)
- Wrong paper selected in the print dialog vs what is loaded
- Borderless printing — some printers expand the image to bleed off the edges
- Minimum margins — the printer cannot print to the absolute edge, which can interact with scaling options
- PDF viewer scaling — opening an exported PDF and printing with Fit to Page
- Unit confusion — expecting millimetres while the job was set in inches, or measuring the wrong edge
- Thinking in pixels — cropping in Photos without a physical-size layout
Troubleshooting sequence
- Confirm paper size — the page size in your layout app should match the paper loaded and the paper size in the print dialog.
- Confirm intended physical dimensions — for example 2×2 in or 35×45 mm — and which edge you will measure.
- Disable automatic page fitting — turn off Fit to Page, Scale to Fit, or similar options where your printer or PDF viewer offers them.
- Use Actual Size / 100% when printing an exported PDF or AirPrint job that should keep layout geometry.
- Print one test on the same paper you will use for the final batch.
- Measure with a ruler — preferably millimetres for small ID-size prints.
- Adjust printer settings if the printer itself is still scaling (borderless off, correct tray, no “fit” options).
