How to Keep a Digital Archive of Kids' Artwork Without Uploading Everything to a Server

Digitized kids' artwork is personal. Parents reasonably ask where those images live, whether an account is required, and whether an app uploads everything to a company server. Privacy should be evaluated with clear questions — not vague promises.

Questions parents should ask

• Where are images stored by default?
• Is an account required?
• Does the app upload artwork to the developer's servers?
• What do cloud backups mean in practice?
• What happens when you share, export or print?
• How do you delete data?
• Who controls backups?

Where images are stored

Some apps keep libraries primarily on device. Others sync to a vendor cloud by default. Neither approach is automatically wrong — but they are different, and parents should know which one they are choosing.

Accounts

An account can enable sync across devices. It can also create another place where family data is associated with a login. If you prefer fewer accounts for children's artwork, look for tools that do not require one.

Uploads vs on-device processing

“Private” should mean more than a marketing word. Ask whether artwork leaves the phone for storage or analysis, and under what conditions.

Sharing still has destinations

If you deliberately export or share to Files, iCloud Drive, Mail, Messages, Google Drive or another app, those destinations have their own privacy behavior. Local-first does not mean data can never leave the phone under any circumstance — it means the default library is not uploaded to ArtYears servers for storage.

Backups and deletion

Ask how uninstalling the app affects the library, and where backups live afterward. With ArtYears, deleting the app removes the private local library according to normal iOS behavior; backups and exports you saved elsewhere remain where you stored them.
